Start out with replacing the lights. Of course you shouldn't confine this to merely the cooking area. You need to change your incandescent lights along with energy-saver, compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs are usually energy-efficient which means electricity consumption is lower, and, even though they cost a bit more to buy, will outlast an incandescent light ten times over. Changing the light bulbs would certainly keep a great deal of bulbs out of the landfills, which is good. It goes further than just replacing the lights, though; turning off lights that aren't needed is definitely another good thing to do. The kitchen lights in particular are often left on the entire day, just because the family tends to spend a lot of time there. Of course this also happens in other rooms, not just the kitchen. Do an exercise if you like; have a look at the quantity of electricity you can save by turning the lights off when you don't need them.

From the above it ought to be apparent that just in the kitchen, by itself, there are lots of little opportunities for saving energy and money. Green living is not that hard. Mostly, all it will take is a little common sense.
